In June Al Palm was diagnosed with a rare neurological disorder call Neuromyelitis Optica (NMO). It is estimated that only 5000 people in the USA are currently diagnosed with this disorder. In the last five months the disease has devastated Al physically. He was once able to run his business, drive a car, and take care of himself and his family in every way. Today he is completely bed ridden in a nursing home and is unable to do some of the simplest tasks like sitting up, answering a cell phone or flossing. He is completely reliant on others to bathe, dress, feed, transfer from bed to wheel chair, etc.
The mental and physical burdens for Al and his family are now enormous. "Al's Big Benefit" is a group of family and friends who will be hosting a spaghetti dinner to help raise funds to assist Al and his family to cope with the financial issues they now face. Al and Joan’s extended family have set a goal to raise $50,000 to assist with their needs. The proceeds will be used to purchase in priority order:
1) Specialized equipment for the home, i.e.: Bed, hospital lift, wheelchair 2) Building materials for a home remodel to provide accessibility and adequate bathroom/ shower needs. All labor costs will be donated by family and friends 3) Specialized transportation (handicap accessible van)
Our priority is to get Al back in his own home. Being in his own home will have a tremendous positive emotional effect on him and his family. Forgoing a $12,000 per month nursing home expense will additionally stabilize healthcare costs and create a manageable family budget.
Your assistance and generosity would be very much appreciated.
Sincerely, Al and Joan Palm
